DLC20 Discussion (maybe, but why not?)

though if I had a choice we would also get one of my lovely duckies…….
but I am still happy about the deer
and mad about the duck…….

Just because the pack contains a single animal so redundant it makes the Himalayan Brown Bear look worthwhile doesn't mean people won't buy it...
I agree, while I feel the elephant is one of the most wasted slots of all time (this isn't a dis towards the animal itself, just the fact of what it could have taken the place of) I so far like this DLC and will still probably get it, I just hope we a bird, languar, and/or blackbuck

The dlc is looking fairly strong with a monkey and asian deer things we have been asking for forever alongside the honey badger which is fairly well wanted. It just has the misfortune to also have the most mind boggling awful animal pick to ever be conceived by frontier,

I'm happy with most of the animal selections, altough the elephant's could have been occupied by another animal, and i'm still a little upset because the Fishing Cat didn't stay (I still hope it can arrive in a future DLC.)

The other three picks are perfectly fine even if none of them were ones I was personally invested in. What could save this for me is a bird (or two) and something like a muntjac (though the Pere David's Deer might make that less likely?)

It really has been radio silence for no reason
I'm usually the first person to say "They aren't posting anything on the socials because there's no news to share and nothing to say." But they have things to say. Presumably. Haha. I really am wondering if somebody is on vacation or whatever. LOL

None of the tree kangaroo are asian? and even if you go by political boundaries instead of biogeographic the goodfellows and matschies are both from new guinea which is considered asian
They technically fit. And maybe it's years of assuming they would be linked to a more specific pack (oceania, Australia) or something very general (Zookeeper)... But I'm just not seeing it. But then again, if the elephant can work...

Since they seem to be going with a broader theme than just India, I guess it could make sense?

I dunno. I'm just refusing to get my hopes up again. And on Tree Kangaroo Tuesday, of all the days!

No one hates elephants its just that the elephant is objectively as useless of a pick as possible. Elephants are one of my favourite animals but in a selection of 7 animals from asia designed to support and build a healthy zoo game they honestly could not have picked a worse animal if they tried. It does nothing for the game functionality or realism wise.
I mean, I actually think their post highlights some potential uses for this species in an in-game zoo. I definitely agree with folks that it's not an essential animal and there are others I'd prefer over it but there's some ways to theme distinctly for them compared to the other elephants I think. And assuming there's a clear size differential... I dunno. I can see some value in it. Especially if the model and textures are vastly improved over the base game elephants.

One thing that does kind of cheapen the Bornean Pygmy Elephant for me is: it was obviously chosen as it is interesting for its small size.

However, the size variations for animals in this game are so big between 0% and 100% (unrealistically big) that I can essentially already have a mini elephant if I want one by getting a 0% Indian Elephant. And I suspect the 100% Bornean Pygmy Elephant will be larger than the 0% Indian. Then the 0% Bornean will probably be stupidly unrealistically miniature.

So the key standout of the animal really probably won’t be that unique at all.

The other thing is there’s actually quite a few solid subspecies or species reskins for Asia from the base game that I’d take if they had to add one or two given they’d either add diversity or a better model of common zoo species.

  • Asiatic Lion
  • Sumatran Tiger
  • Green Peafowl
  • Sumatran Orangutan
  • False Gharial
  • Indian Wolf

Honestly the thing that bugs me the most about the elephant is that if you put in an animal that is so obviously just a better looking replacement for a basegame species, why would you start with an elephant of all things.
Im not even that upset that one of the spots is given to essentially a paid remaster, at this point im used to having one or two big duds each pack, but like the elephants really arent what comes to mind first when thinking about which base game animals needed a replacement the most.

But im curious to see how it will look compared to the indian.
I kinda suspect its gonna be another flamingo situation, where the basegame animal doesnt strike you as bad looking but then you put it next to the new one and it looks awfull
Which bare game animals have not gotten better alternatives yet?

So basically borneo pygmy elephant status is a fraud mostly made up in name of their conservation.
Every source claiming size range about 20% smaller than mainland elephants is using iconic enormous population from indian subcontinent to show how small these are in comparison, while ignoring indochinese specimens, which gone undersizing process from same ecological pressure.

No wonder indian elephants in game is so undersized, when basically indian elephants living in malayan peninsula are literally as big as bornean one.
